MISSION FOR THE CLASS
Elementary Art Curriculum
The New York State Learning Standards for the Arts provide the framework for the elementary art curriculum. The
standards are as follows: Creating,Performing and Participating in the Arts Knowing and Using Art materials and
Resources Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art Understanding the Cultural Contributions of the Arts Student
artists will assess and interpret information, create works of art, display and reflect upon their work.
Students in grades K-5 receive a 4o or 50 minute art experience one day a week. The children articulate and demonstrate
through their artwork, a clear understanding of the art elements and principles introduced and reinforced at various
levels. Students will develop their creative process through the experience of working with varied materials and
techniques. They will demonstrate familiarity with the works and lives of various artists and cultures. Students
will assess and evaluate their artwork.
