Joe Daigle, Maintenance
Imagine waking up
at 4:00am on a wintery Sunday morning. You fumble in the dark for your boots as an icy December wind blasts the
side of your home. Mumbling under your breath your disgust for winter you step out into a frothy pitch.
This is what I had to prepare for every Sunday morning. I have been the maintenance man at St. Helen's since 1974
and before we purchased the baby blue Ford, I pushed a snow blower for three hours or more in order to prepare
the parking lot and sidewalks for the parishioners celebrating the 7:00am Mass. No, the truck was not painted.
A new white truck was purchased in 2000. It equally works as good as the blue. |

Obviously, this purchase is well appreciated and put to excellent use. The utility vehicle not only allows me to
clear the lot in under 15 minutes, but is also used for picking up materials for the church, school, rectory, and
convent such as books for the students, equipment for plays and, of course, for towing the three time award winning
St. Helen's float in the Niska Day Parade. This investment not only saves time, but cuts costly delivery charges
on needed supplies. I ensure the truck is always in excellent working condition by maintaining it myself and making
sure it is serviced regularly.
Oh, and don't forget - that I have a very good assistant, Kim Kaiser. Without him, I just would not be able to
do all of this. He can also work outside like me.
Being a Catholic person, I just can't leave here. Yes, I think I work hard, but look, they treat me so good here.
When will I retire? Well, one year at a time is how I do it. It is one thing if you are from Buffalo, but from
northern Maine, that's another story. |
