November 10, 2008
Hello,
This week we'll be out on Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday we'll be taking the SS State Test. In essence, Friday
is our only solid day this week where we can actually stick to our schedule.
Our Sunday rehearsal went very well. We're almost ready to go. I hope you'll invite friends in family to this engagement,
as the children have worked hard.
The first quarter ended last week. Report cards will be distributed this week. You will also get a supplementary
packet with my rubric scales for each subject, as with the progress reports. The quantitative evaluation of your
child for his report card will be determined from these scale marks (points averaged), which I arrived at after
scrutinizing across the entire curriculum my observational records of performance, behaviors, attitude, effort,
and enthusiasm, student notebooks, assessments, published work, completed projects, and assigned writing tasks.
Your child's grade will represent a whole and fair portrait of your child top to bottom. In the narrative I will
be stating goals for each child for the subsequent quarter. I feel we have gotten off to a great start in this
quarter, which is generally set aside for training the kids to function in an open program. They are starting to
realize now in November where I expect them to go from here and that the challenges are real. They will each rise
to that challenge.
I will send an email reminder of conference dates. Those who have not signed up yet can do so at that time. If
would be nice to have the children present for part of our conference time, but if you feel you don't want your
child part of the meeting then by all means do not feel obligated to bring him/her along. I personally feel the
children are old enough to be part of the discussion regarding their own performance and subsequent growth. We
can cut out the middle-man, so to speak.
Our character education program is focused on self-esteem this month. I'm pushing publications this week, as I
want several projects on display for conference night. We will be finishing compare/contrast essays of old and
news ponds from two weeks ago, putting finishing touches on our play, continuing our reading groups, and finishing
our first unit in the Investigations program. That is the week in a nutshell. Max and Brian will be sending home
this week's newsletter.
See you.

5TH GRADE TESTING
The 2007 School Year marks the second year in a row that 100% of the fifth grade passed the state social studies
exam, taken in November. Congratulations to our fifth graders, and our fifth grade teacher, Mr. Styles, for their
hard work.
